Modern Warfare 4 gameplay debut reignites community debate about how fast Call of Duty movement should be - Eurogamer.net

What the report says
Eurogamer reports that Infinity Ward’s first public multiplayer gameplay for Modern Warfare 4 has intensified an ongoing Call of Duty community argument over movement speed. Instead of appearing through the usual Call of Duty: Next showcase, the footage came from livestreams by selected creators who played the game at Fanatics Fest NYC, held from 16-19 July. The demo focused on Kill Block, a new mode that builds shifting arenas from preset pieces inspired by Modern Warfare maps and reshuffles the layout after every two rounds.
The gameplay drew close attention because players have been waiting to judge how Modern Warfare 4 handles sprinting, sliding and animation transitions. Eurogamer cites Reddit discussion around clips showing long jumps and extended slides, with some users criticizing what they see as exaggerated momentum. A Call of Duty community manager said one widely shared sliding clip came from an alpha build and reflected a visual bug. Infinity Ward also told Eurogamer the referenced bug was already fixed for the upcoming beta on 21 August.
The debate reflects a broader split that has grown since 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot, when tactical sprint and slide-cancel techniques helped push Call of Duty toward faster, more movement-focused multiplayer. Some players want the fluidity preserved, while others want a slower style closer to older entries.
Eurogamer notes that some fans are calling for a “Classic” mode at launch, similar to one used in Black Ops 7, as a possible compromise. The full Modern Warfare 4 release is listed for 23 October on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2.
