Mityana woman dies after setting self ablaze over husband

Police in Mityana District are investigating the death of 23-year-old Irene Nakagulire, who the Observer reports allegedly locked herself in her home and set it on fire after a dispute with her husband, Henry Ziriggwa. The incident happened in Kasiba village in Kiwawu parish, Malangala sub-county, and the case has been treated as a suspected domestic dispute. According to the report, the quarrel began after Nakagulire accused Ziriggwa of intending to reunite with his former wife.

The Observer said Ziriggwa left the home after the argument. Nakagulire then reportedly arranged for a boda boda rider to take the couple’s four-year-old daughter to the child’s maternal home in Mpigi District before sealing herself inside the house. Neighbours tried to help but could not enter because the door was locked from within, and local leaders later alerted police.

Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said officers from Kiwawu and Mityana Central police stations responded to the scene. Nakagulire’s body was found badly burnt and was taken to Mityana Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. The report also said the marriage was only about six months old. The paper placed the case within broader concern over domestic violence in Uganda, a recurring social and policing issue, though the circumstances of each incident differ and remain under investigation.
