Mityana to Host National Anti-Human Trafficking Commemoration as Stakeholders Rally Against Exploitation

Nile Post reports that Mityana District will host Uganda’s national commemoration of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30, with more than 150 participants expected. The event is being organised by the Platform for Social Justice and is due to bring together representatives from government, civil society, development partners, religious institutions, security agencies, local governments and survivor groups.

According to the report, Platform for Social Justice founder and chief executive Juliette Nakyanzi said the commemoration will emphasise the internationally used “4Ps” approach: prevention, protection, prosecution and partnerships. She highlighted community awareness as a key defence against trafficking, particularly where victims are drawn in by misleading promises of jobs, education or improved livelihoods.

Nile Post says Nakyanzi urged Ugandans to use the National Referral Mechanism and the country’s online service directory to help victims reach protection, rehabilitation and legal support. She also called for suspicious recruitment agencies and trafficking activity to be reported, while stressing the importance of survivor-centred support, including psychosocial care, reintegration and justice processes that protect victims.

The commemoration will be held under the theme “Trapped Behind the Scam,” focusing attention on fraudulent recruitment and online deception used to exploit vulnerable people. The planned gathering is intended to review current anti-trafficking efforts, reinforce cooperation among institutions and communities, and renew commitments to tackling networks involved in exploitation. More broadly, the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed internationally to raise awareness of trafficking risks and encourage stronger responses to protect victims.
