Mityana Residents Warned Against Dumping Garbage on Roadsides

Residents in Mityana District, Uganda, have been warned not to dump garbage along roadsides or in other unauthorized places, with local authorities saying offenders could face arrest and prosecution. The warning, reported by Nile Post, comes as the district prepares for its regular community cleaning day held on the last Saturday of every month.

According to district leaders, some residents have continued leaving waste along roads instead of using designated collection points, which officials say is weakening efforts to keep the area clean. Mityana District chairperson Joseph Luzige urged people to take part in the monthly cleaning exercise and to dispose of rubbish properly. He said maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility and that those who ignore the rules will be held accountable.

The report also said Judith Nabakooba, who serves as Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and represents Mityana District as Woman MP, cautioned companies contracted to clean Mityana town to meet their obligations. She warned that firms failing to deliver the work required under their contracts risk having those agreements cancelled.

The broader issue is part of a common local-government challenge in many towns: keeping public spaces clean depends both on community behavior and on reliable waste-collection services. In Mityana’s case, officials are trying to reinforce both sides of that effort ahead of the monthly sanitation drive.
