What the report says

Residents in several parts of Mityana Municipality in central Uganda are pressing the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to resolve a blackout that they say has lasted about a month and disrupted daily life. According to Nile Post, the affected areas include Kitinkokola A and B, Kasambya and Ndibulunji, with more than seven villages reporting unreliable electricity.

The outage has affected traders, households, schools and health facilities. Residents said businesses dealing in beverages, mobile money and airtime have been especially hard hit, while some landlords reported tenants leaving because of the lack of power. Community members also raised security concerns, saying darkness at night could increase theft and other crime.

The residents, led by Antony Kintu, said the disruption worsened after three transformers were installed and then failed within a week. They have given UEDCL three days to restore electricity, warning that they may petition the company if no action is taken. UEDCL’s Mityana manager, Gilbert Tibihwayo, acknowledged the complaints and said the company is working on a solution.

Nile Post reported that UEDCL plans to provide additional transformers to help restore supply. The case reflects broader frustration in Mityana over repeated power interruptions and calls from residents for a more durable fix to the local distribution network.
