Mityana Mayor Urges Govt to Tighten Regulation of Communication Masts

What the report says
Mityana Municipality Mayor Faustine Mukambwe Lukonge has called on the Ugandan government to strengthen rules on the siting and construction of communication masts, especially in residential neighbourhoods. Speaking in Mityana District during the 15th Rotary Cancer Run on Saturday, he said communities should be protected from possible health risks linked to radiation exposure and argued that public health must be considered when infrastructure is placed near homes.
The Nile Post reported that Lukonge raised the issue while thousands of Rotarians, residents and other supporters took part in the annual fundraiser. The event is part of a national Rotary campaign to raise money for a proposed modern cancer institute at St Francis Hospital Nsambya, which is intended to improve diagnosis, treatment and care in Uganda. The article also noted that health workers continue to urge people to go for regular screening and seek treatment early.
Rotary leaders used the occasion to stress that the campaign is not only about fundraising. The president of Rotary Club of Mityana, Viola Biryomumaisho, said the effort also aims to spread cancer awareness in communities, while the president of Rotary Club of Ssingo Mityana, Rev. Joshua Ssali, encouraged routine medical check-ups so diseases can be detected earlier. More generally, concerns about radiofrequency exposure from mobile masts are often debated internationally, but the article itself did not provide technical evidence or regulatory details.
