Mityana Man Jailed 17 Years for Arson, Attempted Murder of Sister

The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mityana has sentenced Kabogoza Henry, a 27-year-old resident of Kiyinda B Cell in Busimbi Division, Mityana District, to 17 years in prison after convicting him of arson and attempted murder in a domestic attack involving his sister. According to Nile Post, the court found that he assaulted the woman at home, threatened her with a panga and knife, and tried to inflict fatal injuries before members of the public intervened and rescued her.

The court also heard that after the failed assault, Kabogoza locked himself inside the family house, poured petrol around it and set it on fire. Residents later helped extinguish the blaze, but the home and the family’s belongings were destroyed, leaving the household displaced and facing financial loss.

During sentencing, the prosecution had asked for a 20-year term, arguing that the offences were planned and showed extreme violence. Chief Magistrate Aisha Nabukeera imposed a slightly lower sentence, saying the attack put lives at risk and caused serious emotional and material harm. The case was presented as a strong example of how Ugandan courts are responding to domestic violence and deliberate property destruction, though that broader trend is general context rather than a detail specific to this ruling.
