What the report says

BBC World News reports that the body of a woman believed to be 18-year-old Lily Hooper was found in bushland in New South Wales after an eight-day search. Hooper was reported missing after she went hiking in Nattai National Park near Sydney on 12 August and did not return home that night. Police said her car had been located in a car park at the base of a difficult trail.

According to the BBC, the body was discovered in the Southern Highlands at about 11:30 local time on Thursday. Police said formal identification was still pending, but they believed the remains were Hooper’s. The report also notes that there had been brief confusion earlier in the day after New South Wales Premier Chris Minns told a parliamentary hearing that she had been found alive, before later correcting himself and saying her body had been found.

The search involved multiple NSW Police units, including air, rescue, trail bike, mounted and dog teams, as well as the Rural Fire Service, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and nearly 100 Australian Defence Force personnel. The case highlights the risks of bushwalking in remote or rugged terrain and the scale of emergency response that can be mobilized when someone goes missing in the Australian bush.
