Missing road signs put Gayaza road users at risk

Residents, motorists and traffic police in Kampala say missing, faded and stolen road signs along sections of Gayaza Road are putting road users at greater risk of crashes. The Independent Uganda, citing URN, reported that the problems are especially serious on busy stretches where drivers need guidance on speed limits, pedestrian crossings, turns and right of way.

People living and working along the road described unsafe conditions for pedestrians, boda boda riders and truck drivers. One resident said crossing during peak hours has become difficult, while riders and truck operators pointed to unmarked junctions and turning points that can be confusing at night or in heavy traffic. Some residents also alleged that signs had been stolen for scrap metal, leaving blind spots without warnings.

Traffic police said poor signage is already showing up in accident records. An officer based at Kanyanya Police Station said road signs are meant to guide and warn users, and their absence can contribute to crashes and enforcement problems. He identified several high-risk locations, including the Kalerwe area, the Mpererwe-Kumukaga stretch and sections near Komamboga and Kumbuzi, as needing urgent attention.

The report says police and residents are calling on the Ministry of Works and Transport to replace missing signs, add pedestrian crossings and road markings, and improve road-safety measures as traffic and settlement growth continue along the corridor.
