Missing Journalist Gideon Tugume Released After Two Weeks in Detention

Nile Post reported that journalist and lawyer Gideon Tugume has been freed after about two weeks in detention, bringing an end to uncertainty over his whereabouts following his arrest earlier in July. The outlet said Tugume resurfaced on Friday and later addressed the controversy linked to comments he made during a live Radio 4 programme.

According to Nile Post, Tugume was arrested on July 6 at his home in Gayaza, Wakiso District, by armed men travelling in a vehicle commonly known in Uganda as a “drone.” The report said the arrest followed remarks in which he questioned whether Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba was President Yoweri Museveni’s biological son and suggested a DNA test. The comments circulated on social media and drew criticism from supporters of Gen. Muhoozi.

The outlet reported that, during the period of detention, relatives, lawyers, journalists and rights advocates raised concerns because they did not publicly know where Tugume was being held. Journalist Stanley Ndawula also published an open letter to Gen. Muhoozi asking for leniency and apologising on behalf of Tugume’s family, friends and colleagues, while noting concerns about Tugume’s health.

Nile Post said Tugume later appeared on Radio 4 and apologised to Gen. Muhoozi for the statements that led to the controversy. His release resolves the immediate question of his whereabouts, but the report notes that questions remain about the circumstances of his detention and release. The case has drawn attention to due process, freedom of expression and the handling of controversial political speech in Uganda.
