Ministry Gets Three Million Albendazole Doses for Child Deworming Programme

Uganda’s Ministry of Health has received three million doses of Albendazole to support the country’s child deworming programme, according to Nile Post. The handover took place during a ceremony in which Mildmay Uganda Board Chair Enyaga Fulukas Boroa presented the medicine to the Director General of Health Services, Dr Charles Olaro.

The donation is intended to expand access to treatment for children at risk of worm infections, which health officials say can affect growth, development and overall wellbeing. Olaro said the extra supply would reduce pressure on government funds used to buy deworming medicines and help strengthen treatment efforts. He also noted that many children across Uganda continue to be affected by worm infestations.

The medicine was donated by Food for the Hungry Canada in partnership with Mildmay Uganda. Mildmay Uganda Executive Director Dr Yvonne Karamagi said regular deworming is an important part of child healthcare and cited national health guidance that recommends deworming children every six months.

Following the handover, the Ministry of Health and the National Medical Stores are expected to distribute the Albendazole across the country. The development matters because it supports a public health programme aimed at preventing infections that can hinder children’s healthy growth and development.
