Minister Ogwang Pledges Kiwafu Playground Upgrade Under AFCON 2027 Legacy Programme as Shyaka Cup Kicks Off in Entebbe

State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has said Kiwafu Playground in Entebbe will be upgraded with an artificial surface under Uganda’s AFCON 2027 legacy programme. He made the pledge while opening the Shyaka Cup Entebbe 2026, a three-month football tournament organised by Entebbe Municipality MP Steven Shyaka Gashaija. Ogwang also used the event to urge local leaders to watch over schools that he said continue to charge fees from pupils enrolled in the Universal Primary Education programme.

According to Nile Post, the minister said the playground would be among the first facilities to benefit from government sports infrastructure plans linked to preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. He also said the Ministry of Education and Sports plans to establish a seed secondary school in Kigungu Cell to improve access to education for children in the area, especially those from landing site communities.

On the field, Lugonjo Nakiwogo began the competition with a 3-2 win over Kiwafu Central. The article says the tournament involves teams from all 24 villages in Entebbe Municipality and is meant to help identify and develop local football talent. The opening was attended by local and national leaders, including Terego District Woman MP Rose Obigah and municipal officials.

The final is scheduled for December 20, 2026, with a prize package that includes Shs30 million, a motorcycle, livestock, trophies, medals and certificates. The report also notes that each participating village has already received jerseys and football equipment.
