MINISTER BARYOMUNSI LAUNCHES NATIONAL MEASLES-RUBELLA CAMPAIGN AND CALLS FOR PUBLIC SUPPORT.

What the report says
Uganda’s Ministry of Health has launched a five-day National Measles-Rubella Immunization Campaign, with Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi opening the exercise on 1 October 2026 at Wakiso Health Centre IV, according to Wakiso District Local Government. The campaign runs from 1 to 5 October and is aimed at children aged 9 months to 5 years, with the ministry urging parents and guardians to bring eligible children for vaccination even if they were previously immunized.
The ministry said the drive is intended to close remaining immunity gaps and strengthen protection against preventable childhood diseases. In the report, Dr. Baryomunsi warned against misinformation and resistance to immunization, saying some communities have reported discouragement from a few religious groups, teachers and parents. He said vaccination remains a key public health measure and that those who intentionally block the exercise could be held accountable.
The Wakiso launch also highlighted local health-system concerns. District Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune pointed to shortages in infrastructure, equipment, medicines and staffing as the district’s population grows. He called for a district hospital and upgrades to existing facilities, while the minister said the hospital process is underway and that designs are already complete.
Other officials, including Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine and district leaders, emphasized community outreach, Village Health Teams and preventive care. The event drew health and government stakeholders, underscoring the campaign’s importance as Uganda works to improve routine immunization coverage and reduce illness and deaths among children.
