The Detroit Free Press reported that health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections tied to eggs, leading Indiana-based Midwest Poultry Services L.P. to voluntarily recall nearly 1.6 million cartons, or about 19 million eggs. The recall, outlined in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration alert, involves brown and white eggs produced at Texas farms and distributed by the company because of possible contamination.

According to the report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says illnesses have been reported in 17 states, including Michigan. As of the article’s publication on July 26, 2026, 98 people had become ill and 26 had been hospitalized, with no deaths reported. Texas accounted for most cases, while Michigan had one to two cases on the CDC’s map. Officials said Midwest Poultry Services is a common source but may not explain every illness, and the investigation is continuing.

The affected eggs were distributed to retail and foodservice customers in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, and were also available through Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, and smaller outlets in Mississippi and New Mexico. Brands listed in the recall include Kroger, Simple Truth, Country Corning, Cal-Maine Sunups and Brookshire’s. Cartons range from six-count to 60-count sizes, with sell-by or best-by dates from July 20 to Aug. 17, 2026, and identifying codes including “P-1950” or “0840962” with Julian dates 157 through 184.

Consumers are advised to discard or return recalled eggs, and businesses that received them should not sell or serve them. Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, and can be especially serious for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
