Fox News reported that an FDA advisory committee has voted by majority to recommend allowing broader pharmacy compounding of six peptide compounds, a step that could make them easier to obtain through licensed pharmacies rather than unregulated online sellers. The vote came after a two-day hearing in Maryland by the FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee, which considered whether the substances should be added to the Section 503A Bulks List.

According to Fox News, citing Reuters, the panel supported moving forward BPC-157, TB-500, KPV, MOTS-c, Semax and Epitalon. The article described proposed uses including ulcerative colitis, wound healing, inflammatory conditions, obesity, osteoporosis, cerebral ischemia, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia and insomnia. A seventh peptide was reviewed, but Fox’s report focused on the six that received favorable votes.

The recommendation is not the same as FDA approval. The agency still must decide whether to accept the committee’s advice, and compounded products are regulated differently from FDA-approved drugs. Peptides are short amino-acid chains involved in biological processes such as metabolism, growth and tissue repair; some are part of approved medicines, while others are marketed for wellness, performance or anti-aging uses despite ongoing safety and efficacy questions.

Fox quoted Jim LaValle, a Texas clinical pharmacist and chair of the International Peptide Society, as saying the decision should be viewed as a possible move toward more accountable access, not unrestricted use. He urged guardrails including qualified clinicians, licensed pharmacies, quality testing and follow-up, while cautioning consumers against self-experimenting with “research use only” products sold online.
