Middlesbrough sign USA midfielder Berhalter

BBC Sport Football reports that Middlesbrough have completed the signing of United States midfielder Sebastian Berhalter from Vancouver Whitecaps. The Championship club have brought in the 25-year-old for an undisclosed fee, with Berhalter agreeing a four-year contract.

According to the BBC, Berhalter leaves the Major League Soccer side after recording 20 goals in 167 appearances. The report also notes that he played in all five of the USA’s matches at the 2026 World Cup, adding recent international experience to Middlesbrough’s midfield options.

Berhalter could make his first appearance for Kim Hellberg’s team in the Carabao Cup first-round match against Wrexham on Friday, 7 August. In comments carried by Middlesbrough’s club website and cited by the BBC, the midfielder said he sees the move as the right place to continue developing as a player and person.

The transfer also carries a family and English football connection: Berhalter was born in London while his father, Gregg Berhalter, was playing for Crystal Palace. Gregg later coached the United States national team, including his son. The move matters for Middlesbrough as part of their summer squad-building, while for Berhalter it represents a switch from MLS to the English league system at a point when he is already established at international level.
