Microsoft rushes out Windows fix for Dell's hot and bothered PCs - The Register

What the report says
The Register reported that Microsoft issued an out-of-band Windows update on Monday, July 20, 2026, to resolve a compatibility problem affecting some Dell PCs. The emergency fix is intended to let the affected machines receive Microsoft’s July 2026 security updates after the regular Patch Tuesday rollout had been paused for those models.
According to the report, the problem involved the Intel Innovation Platform Framework driver and a Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface added in a June 23 preview update. Microsoft described the fault as potentially altering performance, power use or system behavior; The Register said affected devices could slow down, run hot or shut down unexpectedly.
The fix was released for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 as KB5121767. Microsoft also provided a separate out-of-band hotpatch, KB5121768, for eligible Windows 11 Enterprise systems that are enrolled in hotpatching. The publication said Microsoft moved quickly by stopping the security update rollout for the affected Dell devices before pushing the corrective update.
The episode matters because it delayed delivery of a monthly security bundle to some Windows systems and required administrators or users with impacted Dell hardware to apply an additional fix. More broadly, it highlights the operational risk when driver, firmware and operating-system changes interact unexpectedly, especially around security patch cycles where delays can leave devices without current protections.
