What the report says

The Verge reports that Microsoft has stepped in after Windows 11 users complained about McAfee trial advertisements appearing when LG monitors were connected to their PCs. According to the report, Microsoft’s Windows chief Pavan Davuluri said LG agreed to quickly turn off the McAfee notification inside the LG Monitor App Installer, and Microsoft indicated it would continue working with hardware partners on similar ecosystem issues.

The controversy centers on LG monitor software delivered through Windows’ driver update process. The Verge says users reported that connecting an LG monitor could trigger a silent Windows driver update that installed LG driver components and the LG Monitor App Installer without a clear user prompt. The resulting software then displayed large pop-up promotions for McAfee antivirus trials and LG apps. Reports of the auto-install behavior have circulated since at least 2024, the outlet said.

LG, in a statement cited by The Verge from Windows Latest, said McAfee itself was not installed automatically and required user consent. The company also said the LG Monitor App Installer was distributed through Microsoft’s official Windows channel, included McAfee only as an option, and did not collect or transmit personal customer data.

The episode matters because it highlights a recurring tension in Windows hardware support: automatic driver and companion-app installs can help devices work properly, but they can also bring unwanted software and advertising onto users’ machines. The Verge notes a comparable issue involving Dell’s Alienware Command Center, though Dell told the outlet it moved that software to an opt-in installation process in February 2025.
