Quartz India reported that Microsoft launched MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, its first AI model built specifically for cybersecurity, at an event in San Francisco on Monday. The company also introduced Project Perception, described in the report as a new agentic security platform. The announcement places Microsoft’s expanding AI work more directly into the market for automated cyber defense tools.

According to the report, Microsoft said MAI-Cyber-1-Flash performs best when used together with OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 inside MDASH, the company’s vulnerability management harness. In that configuration, Microsoft claimed the system reached 96% on the CyberGym benchmark, a measure cited in the report for cyber-related model performance. Quartz India said that result was 12 percentage points higher than Anthropic’s Mythos and also exceeded models from Google and OpenAI on the same key benchmark.

Microsoft also said the new model combination would run at half the cost of its current MDASH setup, according to the report. If borne out in real-world deployments, lower operating costs could matter for security teams that use AI to triage vulnerabilities, assess risk, or support incident response workflows.

The report did not provide additional detail on Project Perception’s release timeline, pricing, customer availability, or independent validation of the benchmark claims. More broadly, major technology companies are racing to tailor large language models for specialized enterprise uses, and cybersecurity is a prominent target because defenders face high alert volumes, fast-moving threats, and pressure to automate repetitive analysis without reducing oversight.
