Microsoft is testing free, ad-supported cloud gaming for Xbox Insiders - The Verge

What the report says
Microsoft has begun testing a free, ad-supported cloud gaming option for Xbox Insiders, The Verge reported on July 23. The trial lets participating users stream certain games they already own from their Xbox libraries without paying for a cloud gaming subscription. The test is limited in scope: sessions are capped at one hour, apply only to select titles, and Microsoft says ads will appear before a session starts rather than during gameplay.
According to The Verge, the feature is optional and does not affect users who already pay for cloud gaming access. Microsoft described the offering as available only for a limited test period and framed it as part of an effort to make Xbox games more affordable and accessible. The Verge noted that Microsoft had previously tested an ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming model internally, with earlier information indicating roughly two minutes of preroll advertising in that version.
The move follows broader changes to Microsoft’s gaming subscriptions. The Verge reported that Microsoft recently raised Game Pass prices while adding unlimited cloud gaming to Game Pass Essential, its lowest-priced tier at $9.99 per month. Xbox Cloud Gaming had previously been tied to Game Pass Ultimate.
The test matters because it suggests Microsoft may be exploring an ad-supported model similar to those now common in video streaming services. The Verge also pointed to cloud gaming’s potential usefulness for Xbox One owners who want to play newer Xbox Series X/S games without purchasing new hardware. The development comes amid wider turbulence for Xbox, including layoffs, studio closures, higher console prices planned for August 1, and a renewed emphasis on the Fallout franchise.
