Microsoft Insists Xbox Game Streaming Ads Will Play Before Sessions and Won't Interrupt Gameplay - IGN

What the report says
IGN reports that Microsoft has begun testing an ad-supported version of Xbox game streaming, giving Xbox Insiders a way to stream selected owned games without a Game Pass subscription during the trial. The test is available to users with an Xbox account on supported devices and in regions where Xbox game streaming is offered.
Under the test, ads run before a streaming session starts rather than during play, Microsoft said. IGN reports that players watch about two minutes of advertising, then receive a one-hour streaming session. When that session ends, they can start another after viewing more ads, with game progress continuing across the user’s account and devices. Microsoft described participation as optional and said users can choose other play options.
Microsoft framed the experiment as an attempt to make access to games more affordable on devices people already own, including for Xbox One owners who may want to play newer Xbox Series X|S titles through the cloud. The company also published guidelines saying ads should provide value, be clearly identified, meet quality standards and avoid disrupting gameplay.
IGN places the test in the context of rising hardware costs and broader changes at Xbox. The article notes Microsoft recently announced higher Xbox console prices, citing component pressures, and that Xbox leadership has spoken about the need for different business models as consoles become less affordable. The test could indicate how Microsoft is exploring lower-cost access to cloud gaming while it evaluates player and advertiser response.
