Microsoft confirms Windows Server Update Services sync delays - BleepingComputer

What the report says
BleepingComputer reports that Microsoft has acknowledged an ongoing problem with Windows Server Update Services, or WSUS, that has disrupted synchronization for more than a week. The issue means affected WSUS servers may take unusually long to sync or may time out, limiting administrators’ ability to obtain current update metadata from Microsoft Update and distribute the latest Windows updates through WSUS or Configuration Manager.
According to Microsoft’s Windows health dashboard, the problem affects both client and server platforms, including Windows 10 version 1607 and later and Windows Server 2012 and later. Microsoft said the issue began in recent days, with the impact increasing from July 13, 2026. WSUS is commonly used in enterprise environments to centralize update management, allowing organizations to stage, approve and deploy Microsoft updates from a local server rather than having every machine connect directly to Microsoft’s update infrastructure.
BleepingComputer says Microsoft applied mitigation measures on Saturday that restored normal synchronization behavior for new or rebuilt WSUS installations. However, servers already affected may still have problems, and Microsoft is continuing work on steps intended to help customers safely clear problematic metadata from their environments.
The incident matters because WSUS remains a key tool for many IT teams managing patch deployment across large Windows fleets. Delayed synchronization can slow the rollout of security and reliability updates, increasing operational risk if organizations cannot move updates through their normal channels. BleepingComputer also noted that Microsoft has handled several WSUS-related update delivery issues in the past year, including problems affecting Windows 11 updates and later synchronization failures.
