What the report says

Mexico is asking the United States to provide evidence for a reported cross-border shooting that Washington said targeted US security personnel near the border with the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. According to Al Jazeera’s reporting, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said at her Monday news conference that her government had received claims of shots being fired from the Mexican side, but that Mexico’s National Guard, army and navy had found no sign of such an attack.

The exchange came after US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson said on X that members of the US Coast Guard had been fired upon in Texas and that the matter would be dealt with quickly. He also said US and Mexican forces were coordinating in the border area. In response to the alleged incident, the United States has sent about 500 troops to the border, along with helicopters, drones and anti-drone equipment, while Mexico has also deployed forces as part of a joint border operation called Operation Mirror.

The episode reflects ongoing friction between Sheinbaum’s government and the Trump administration over border security, sovereignty and the role of US agencies in Mexico. Al Jazeera notes that Sheinbaum has repeatedly objected to what she sees as overreach by US officials, while Trump has pressed for a more forceful regional campaign against drug cartels. The dispute matters because it highlights how border security cooperation remains active, but politically sensitive, amid wider tensions between the two governments.
