Medical Interns Reject Government Deadline, Refuse to Report Over Welfare Concerns

Uganda’s medical interns, through the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI), have rejected a government deadline to report to their assigned internship centres, saying they will not return until concerns over welfare, allowances and the new health training policy are addressed. The dispute, reported by Nile Post, has escalated into a standoff between the interns and the Ministry of Health.

FUMI says it formally wrote to Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi on August 13, arguing that the government has had enough time to engage interns and respond to their grievances. The group says it has already submitted welfare survey findings and recommendations to the ministry and requested a meeting to present them, but has not been received. The interns are not rejecting internship training itself; instead, they want the policy suspended and reopened for consultation, along with improved monthly support.

The ministry has said eligible interns were deployed and should report between August 3 and August 14, warning that those who fail to do so could lose their placements. FUMI has pushed back, saying this position is unfair and that claims about hospitals functioning without interns ignore already strained staffing levels in public facilities.

The disagreement matters because interns play a practical role in Uganda’s health system, especially in busy hospitals handling emergencies. The federation says shortages, fatigue and heavy workloads can affect patient care, while the government maintains consultations are ongoing. FUMI is now seeking direct engagement with President Yoweri Museveni as the deadline approaches.
