WPVI-TV reports that Delaware officials have declared a measles outbreak as cases also increase in nearby Chester County, Pennsylvania. The declaration came Wednesday after four confirmed Delaware cases, all involving unvaccinated adult men in Kent County. Health authorities said they are still investigating how the patients were exposed to the airborne virus.

Dr. Robert Rosenbaum, medical director of Delaware’s EMS and Preparedness section, told WPVI that contact tracing is underway and officials are monitoring for additional infections. In Chester County, the public health director reported 13 confirmed cases and said more are expected. The station also included local residents expressing concern and support for vaccination efforts as the regional count grows.

Health leaders cited by WPVI warned that measles can cause serious complications, especially for infants, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Rosenbaum said people are generally considered immune if they were born before 1957, have laboratory-confirmed immunity, or received the standard two-dose measles vaccine series in early childhood. He also said full vaccination provides a very high level of protection.

Delaware is working to broaden access through clinics and mobile vaccination units, according to WPVI, while shots remain available at pharmacies and primary care offices. Reported early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and pink eye, and officials advised people with possible symptoms to seek care promptly. The outbreak matters because measles spreads easily and vaccination gaps can allow clusters to expand across communities.
