Mbaraara, Isingiro Face 12-day Water Disruption as NWSC Shuts Kagera Plant

What the report says
Thousands of residents in Mbarara City and Isingiro District are set to experience water interruptions after the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) announced a temporary shutdown of the Kagera Water Treatment Plant. According to the Nile Post report, the plant will be out of service for 12 days, from October 1 to October 12, 2026, while engineers carry out system reconfiguration and related infrastructure work.
NWSC said the planned exercise is intended to improve water production and distribution, connect new distribution networks, and strengthen the reliability of supply in the southwestern corridor. The utility also said technical teams will conduct maintenance and structural adjustments meant to improve hydraulic flow and overall service stability. The company linked the works to ongoing low-pressure problems and the needs of growing settlements in the area.
Areas expected to be affected include parts of Mbarara City and several communities in Isingiro District, among them Katete Central, Rwemirinzi, Karugangama, Bihunya, Kitebero, Rubeho, Karubanda, Kaberebere Town Council, Masha Sub-county, and nearby villages and settlements. NWSC advised customers to store enough water in advance and use it sparingly during the maintenance period.
The corporation said water service will resume gradually after October 12 because the distribution network will need time to repressurize and stabilize. It added that the Ruharo and Rwebikoona plants will provide alternative supply, although those systems are also facing low-pressure challenges.
