What the report says

Residents in Dwaliro Zone, Mayuge Town Council, Mayuge District, are opposing a proposal by businessman Dauda Isanga to close a community road running through the area. According to Nile Post, the residents say the road is a vital route to homes, water sources and nearby villages, and they have begun collecting signatures to present to Mayuge Town Council.

The dispute has drawn in local leaders as well. Some residents have accused officials of backing the closure, though those leaders deny the claims. Dwaliro Zone chairperson Vicent Ogwara said he was asked to mobilise residents for a meeting on the proposal, but instead informed the community. Residents later met the businessman, but say they rejected the plan because they believe it would limit access to essential services and surrounding settlements.

Councillors Latif Sonai and Rehema Namulondo said the issue had already been reviewed by the council’s executive committee and then declined by the full council, making them question why it was being brought to residents again. Town Clerk Ibrahim Waiswa also rejected claims that the council had approved the closure, saying the road is included in the town’s physical development plan and any change would require the proper planning and consultation process.

The report says the road has long been in use and has served the area since Mayuge gained town status more than two decades ago. The matter is now expected to move through the relevant council and planning channels.
