Maynard loses York job three months after title win

BBC Sport reports that York City have parted company with manager Stuart Maynard just three months after he led the club back into the English Football League. The club announced the decision on social media, saying the board had found it difficult but had acted because of a “difference in direction and vision” for York’s future.

Maynard’s exit comes after a highly successful spell on the pitch. York won the National League title in April, sealing promotion after a 10-year absence from the EFL. Their decisive result came in dramatic fashion against Rochdale, with York scoring deep into second-half stoppage time to draw with their title rivals, who would have gone up as champions had they won. The Minstermen finished the campaign with 108 points.

According to the BBC, Maynard had replaced Adam Hinshelwood in August 2025 after previously managing Notts County. York’s statement acknowledged that the timing may appear surprising to supporters and outside observers, but said the board believed the decision would leave the club better placed in the long term and aligned with the ownership’s plan for sustained success.

The change leaves York preparing for the new season without the manager who oversaw their return to League Two. BBC Sport says the club are due to host Crawley Town in a Carabao Cup preliminary-round tie on Monday, 3 August, before opening their League Two campaign at home to Bristol Rovers 12 days later.
