Mayiga Urges Buganda Caucus to Champion Rule of Law and Buganda’s Interests

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on Members of Parliament from Buganda to promote the rule of law, condemn abductions and press for the Kingdom’s priorities in Parliament. Nile Post reported that he made the remarks during a meeting with the Buganda Caucus at Bulange Mengo, where both sides also discussed closer cooperation between the Kingdom and its legislators.

According to the report, Mayiga told the MPs to focus on a set of Buganda concerns that include better roads, improved health services and fairer delivery of government programmes such as the Parish Development Model. He also urged them to explain Buganda’s positions on federalism, land rights and protection of the Kabaka’s dignity while working within a united Uganda. He further argued that allocation of public resources should better reflect population size.

Mayiga also welcomed government efforts in areas such as health, agriculture and oil development, while saying oil revenues should first help address environmental concerns and support roads, education, agriculture and health services, especially in Hoima and surrounding areas. He said Bunyoro should receive its share of oil revenue without delay. The meeting also had a practical development angle: the MPs contributed Shs51.5 million toward a water ambulance for communities in Ssese and Buvuma, where access to medical care can be difficult because of travel across water.
