Mayiga pays tribute to Muteesa I as Buganda marks Independence Day

What the report says
Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has paid tribute to the late Kabaka Muteesa I during Buganda Kingdom’s Bulungibwansi and Local Government Day celebrations, linking the monarch’s legacy to Uganda’s independence struggle. The event took place at Ssaabawaali Gombe grounds in Kyaddondo on October 8, which also marks Uganda’s Independence Day and a day of reflection on community work and local governance in the kingdom.
According to Nile Post, Mayiga used the occasion to praise Kyaddondo for strong participation in kingdom programmes and to encourage other counties to improve their performance. He also urged Buganda officials to mobilise residents around kingdom initiatives as a way of improving livelihoods and reducing poverty. The Katikkiro additionally welcomed the government’s Bulungibwansi programme, while saying issues affecting its implementation should be resolved.
The day’s activities included a Bulungibwansi campaign in Kiryammuli Village, where Mayiga planted a tree, and a visit to Princess Proscovia Nawatti Mukasa’s homestead in Bulyankolo Village, which has been recognised under the Amaka Amalungi Kaalo Matendo programme. At the main grounds, he launched the local Bulungibwansi committee and handed over tools for community work.
Buganda ministers and local leaders, including officials responsible for Bulungibwansi and local government, attended the event. A report on the performance of Buganda’s 18 counties was also presented, with Kyaddondo described as a strong performer.
