What the report says

Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda, has inaugurated new boards for the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation (BUCADEF) and the kingdom’s coffee initiative, Mmwanyi Terimba. According to Nile Post, the appointments are intended to help both bodies strengthen their role in household incomes, grassroots economic development and the wider Buganda economy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayiga said development should begin with improving the welfare of ordinary people, linking that idea to BUCADEF’s work in food production, agriculture and livestock farming. He said the foundation was created to help restore hope in communities and support practical efforts that can improve livelihoods.

On Mmwanyi Terimba, Mayiga said the initiative was designed to give Buganda a stronger presence in the coffee value chain, including buying and marketing coffee rather than only producing it. He also encouraged promotion of local coffee consumption, better farming practices and higher quality output so farmers can earn more.

Mayiga urged the new board members to work with innovation, transparency and commitment. Nile Post reported that the Mmwanyi Terimba board will be chaired by Daniel Damulira, while Dr Ben Muyinza Ssekamatte will chair BUCADEF. The announcement reflects the kingdom’s broader push to link cultural institutions with economic activity and community development.
