What the report says

The Masaka High Court has ordered the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to appear within two days and explain questions raised about the academic qualifications of Sembabule District Woman MP Florence Nambaziira. The directive came during proceedings linked to a petition by Mary Begumisa, who is challenging whether Nambaziira meets the educational standards required to hold a parliamentary seat.

According to Nile Post, Begumisa’s legal team asked the court to compel NCHE to clarify the status of the documents under dispute. Her lawyer, Isaac Ebiro Ekirapa, told the court that the council’s input was needed to determine whether the certificates and related records are recognized and valid. He also said the institution had not previously appeared to address the matter, prompting the request for a court order.

Begumisa further told the court that she had obtained documents from the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) that, in her view, point to a certificate in hair plaiting, hair washing and styling. Those claims remain allegations raised by the petitioner and have not been resolved by the court. Justice Christine Akello granted the application, giving NCHE a short deadline to respond as the case continues.

The dispute matters because it goes to the eligibility of an elected member of Parliament and the verification of academic credentials in public office. As reported by Nile Post, the court’s next step will depend on NCHE’s explanation and the wider evidence presented in the ongoing case.
