Martinez 'back in a few weeks' after operation

What the report says
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez says he expects to be fit again in a few weeks after undergoing an operation following the club’s 2-0 Premier League win at Everton. The Argentina international, who joined Chelsea this summer after a long spell at Aston Villa, was injured in a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during the second half and later left the ground on a stretcher after receiving prolonged treatment.
BBC Sport reported that Martinez was taken to hospital after the match, and manager Xabi Alonso said the goalkeeper had been concussed. Martinez later posted on social media that the operation had gone well and thanked supporters for their messages. He also said Chelsea’s victory and clean sheet were the main positives from the day.
The injury is likely to keep Martinez out for several matches, with backup goalkeeper Mike Penders set to continue in goal. Penders made his Premier League debut after coming on at Goodison Park and is expected to play in Chelsea’s upcoming league matches against Tottenham and Manchester United, as well as a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool. Alonso said the club has full confidence in the 21-year-old, describing him as brave and ready to step in when needed.
