Mark Zuckerberg has an image problem - so why is Meta's business booming?

What the report says
Meta and its founder Mark Zuckerberg are facing renewed criticism over the company’s image, but a BBC World News report says the business continues to grow despite the backlash. The piece notes that a new Aaron Sorkin film casts Zuckerberg as a villain, while Meta is also dealing with lawsuits and investigations tied to youth safety, addictive product design and alleged harms from social media use.
According to the BBC, Meta has spent much of the past year fighting legal challenges and public distrust, including cases involving Instagram, Facebook and its chatbots. The company disputes many of the claims and has said it has made changes to improve safety. It has also agreed to settlements in several US cases, including a broad deal with US states and territories that avoided further testimony from top executives and limited the release of internal documents.
Even so, the report says Meta’s core business remains strong. User numbers on some of its apps have risen, revenue has grown sharply, and its share price has recently climbed. Analysts quoted by the BBC suggested that criticism has not meaningfully reduced demand for Meta’s products, which continue to be widely used even by people who dislike the company.
The article also highlights Meta’s push into AI. At its recent Connect event, Zuckerberg focused on new AI products and smart glasses, including Muse, an AI assistant designed to handle tasks for users. That effort may be important to Meta’s future, but the BBC notes it also depends on users trusting the company with highly personal data.
