Mangione pleads guilty to federal charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing

Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to charges linked to the killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, according to Al Jazeera. The hearing took place on Friday, and the plea covered two federal counts: interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. Mangione also acknowledged in court that he shot Thompson and that he knew the act was illegal.

Al Jazeera reported that the case centers on the December 2024 shooting of Thompson on a New York City street, which prompted a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania. During the hearing, Mangione described researching UnitedHealthcare’s investor conference and contacting the company while posing as an investor, information he said he used to target Thompson. Federal prosecutors called the killing deliberate, calculated and premeditated.

The guilty plea matters because federal prosecutors said it may allow them to seek the maximum penalty, which they described as life imprisonment. Mangione still faces separate New York state charges, including second-degree murder and firearm offences, and his legal team has sought to dismiss those counts. The state case is set to begin next month, while federal sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 18, according to the report.
