Attorneys for Luigi Mangione are expected to meet federal prosecutors on Friday, according to BBC World News, amid US media reports that a plea agreement may be under discussion. Mangione is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson in New York in 2024 and faces separate federal and state cases.

The BBC reported that Mangione is charged in federal court with two stalking-related offences that could carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. It was not immediately clear which charges might be part of any potential deal. Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both the federal and state proceedings, and the BBC noted that any plea arrangement would still need court approval and could fall apart.

A spokesperson for the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York said only that a conference was scheduled for Friday morning. Mangione’s lawyers, the federal prosecutors and the Manhattan district attorney’s office did not comment to the BBC.
