Man Utd bring in Leicester goalkeeper Leitzig

BBC Sport reports that Manchester United have signed goalkeeper Janina Leitzig from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee, adding another player to their squad ahead of the new season. The 27-year-old is United’s second summer arrival after defender Andrea Medina.

According to the BBC, Leitzig is understood to have agreed a three-year contract after United activated a release clause in the Leicester deal she renewed in 2025. The German goalkeeper, a former youth international, had been with Leicester for three years, first joining on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich before becoming a regular starter.

Leitzig leaves Leicester with almost 70 appearances in all competitions. BBC Sport notes that, despite her role as a first-choice goalkeeper, she was unable to prevent the club from being relegated from the Women’s Super League last season. Her earlier career also included spells with Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich.

The move matters because it strengthens Manchester United in a key position and brings in a player the club had tracked for some time. BBC Sport says United had long held an interest in Leitzig and first reported in 2023 that contact had been made while she was on loan at Leicester. The signing also reflects continuing squad changes in the women’s game following WSL relegation and promotion outcomes.
