CBS News reported that a Madison, Wisconsin, police officer shot and killed a man Wednesday after police said he injured an officer with a fixed-blade knife during an attempted arrest. Police had not formally named the man as of Thursday, describing him as in his 30s, but Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and District 6 Alder Davey Mayer identified him as Corey Ruiz. Officers were responding to reports of bicycle thefts and people checking vehicle doors in the Marquette neighborhood when the man fled on a bicycle, according to police.

The Madison Police Department said officers later encountered him at an intersection, where he came off the bicycle under circumstances still being reviewed and a struggle followed. Police Chief John Patterson said an officer’s Taser did not stop the confrontation, and the injured officer then fired. CBS said video it reviewed appeared to show three shots shortly after the Taser was used, and a knife being thrown to the ground after the shooting. The man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Four officers were involved in or witnessed the incident, and the officer who fired was described by Patterson as a veteran. Rhodes-Conway said all four were placed on administrative leave under standard protocol. The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation will lead the inquiry. Gov. Tony Evers called for transparency and accountability, while attorney Ben Crump said he had been retained by Ruiz’s family.

The shooting prompted protests and a vigil near the scene, a busy neighborhood street less than two miles from the state Capitol. CBS noted Madison police do not currently use body-worn cameras. Patterson urged calm, saying public videos show only part of what investigators will review.
