What the report says

Manchester City’s appeal against more than 100 Premier League financial-rule breaches is expected to be heard by January, according to David Kogan, chair of England’s Independent Football Regulator. In comments reported by Al Jazeera from Times Radio, Kogan said the case is being handled by an independent commission rather than the Premier League itself, and that the process is expected to take about 12 weeks.

The club has said it contests the findings and maintains it did nothing wrong. Al Jazeera reported that City were found guilty by an independent commission on charges covering alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018. The accusations include claims that the club used false contracts to inflate revenue and lower reported expenses by more than 900 million pounds ($1.2 billion), though no sanction has yet been announced.

The outcome could have major consequences for one of English football’s most successful clubs, including a possible points deduction and relegation, though those outcomes remain speculative. The report noted wider political sensitivity around the case after comments from public officials drew criticism, and Kogan said the regulator must remain free from political interference.

City remain active on the pitch while the legal process continues, sitting top of the Premier League at the time of the report. Manager Enzo Maresca said last week that he trusts the club and expects it to prevail in the appeal.
