A former senior Premier League club executive has warned that Manchester City’s legal dispute with the league could “spiral out of control,” as pressure grows over the possible fallout from the case. Christian Purslow, who has held leadership roles at Liverpool, Aston Villa and Chelsea, said the dispute could lead to a long run of compensation claims and wider uncertainty for the sport.

BBC Sport reports that City have been found guilty of the vast majority of 115 charges brought by the Premier League, following allegations that the club inflated sponsorship income linked to connected companies and made undisclosed payments to get around financial rules. The Premier League has not yet announced sanctions, but possible consequences could include a points deduction, expulsion or a large fine. BBC Sport also says City are expected to appeal.

Purslow argued that any compensation claims could be extensive because the alleged breaches cover nine seasons and may have affected the outcomes and finances of rival clubs across the league. Football law expert Paul Gilroy KC, speaking alongside him on BBC Radio 4, said several clubs have already filed protective claims reserving their right to seek damages if City are ultimately held liable.

The case has become a major issue for English football because of its scale, its length and the uncertainty around next steps. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has urged a swift resolution, while former City chairman David Bernstein said any eventual punishment would need to be more serious than a fine.
