What the report says

Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic has said the club still "count on" him despite speculation that he could leave this summer, according to BBC Sport Football. The 32-year-old Croatia international is in the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has been linked in reports with moves back to Serie A clubs Juventus and Inter Milan.

BBC Sport Football reported that Kovacic missed much of last season because of Achilles and ankle injuries and made only nine appearances for City. He played 45 minutes in Saturday’s friendly against Inter in Hong Kong, where new manager Enzo Maresca gave cautious comments about the midfielder’s future but said he would keep working with him while he remains at the club.

Kovacic said he had spoken with City and was reassured that he remains part of their plans. He also noted that he can help fill in for Rodri, who is expected to miss the early part of the campaign after back surgery. The Croatian added that new signing Elliot Anderson brings quality and physicality to City’s midfield.

The broader context is a busy summer for Manchester City’s midfield, with several players competing for places as the club rebuilds under Maresca. BBC Sport Football’s report suggests Kovacic may still have a role despite uncertainty over his long-term future.
