Police in Singapore have charged a man over an AI-generated image of a crocodile that appeared to show the animal in Pandan Reservoir, a major waterway and recreation spot in the city-state. According to BBC World News, the image led to public concern and triggered a search-and-capture response by authorities after officials were alerted to a possible crocodile sighting in the reservoir on 20 August.

The defendant, identified as Ye Lin and described as originally from Myanmar, was charged with communicating a false message and with obstructing the course of justice. Police allege he created the image, sent it to a colleague and then deleted both the picture and the app used to make it in an effort to hide what had happened. The water agency also suspended activities at the reservoir for two days, and rowing and canoe groups were told to stop operations while checks were carried out.

The next day, the national water agency said the crocodile picture was fake and reported the matter to police. Ye Lin reportedly indicated through an interpreter that he intended to plead guilty. The case is due back in court in November. If convicted, he could face imprisonment and a fine under Singapore law. The case highlights how synthetic images can quickly prompt real-world disruption and official responses, especially when they involve public safety concerns.
