Man arrested over alleged Shs 20,000 bribe attempt during UPDF recruitment

A 20-year-old man was arrested in Masindi district after allegedly trying to bribe Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment officers during an ongoing screening exercise, according to The Observer. The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Kyakabaale Tayebwa of Kimengo sub-county, was taken into custody on Tuesday at the district headquarters and later handed to Masindi Central Police Station for further inquiries.

The recruitment team said Tayebwa had been disqualified after failing to produce a UCE certificate, instead presenting a primary school certificate and a senior four pass slip. Officers also reportedly found discrepancies between the names on his national ID and academic documents. Brig Rogers Kitwala, who heads the recruitment team in Masindi, said the applicant allegedly offered Shs 20,000 to four officers and claimed it was intended to buy them water.

The incident took place as the UPDF screened hundreds of applicants in Masindi and disqualified many over missing documents, identity mismatches, suspected forgery and medical concerns. The newspaper reported that only part of the shortlisted candidates turned up, and more than 40 applicants were ultimately eliminated. The recruitment drive is covering several districts in the Bunyoro sub-region, with the army aiming to select 599 people overall. The arrest highlights the scrutiny around military recruitment and the risks of document fraud or bribery attempts during such exercises.
