It highlights women such as Massaran Koné, who learned the craft from her mother and now uses income from bogolan to support her family and employ other women.

The article says the sector has gained new momentum since April 2026, when bogolan received Protected Geographical Indication status, offering legal recognition tied to its Malian origin and production knowledge. That matters in a country where cotton is a major commodity: the report says cotton generated nearly $70 million in 2024, production reached 598,500 tonnes in 2026, and about 40% of rural households rely on the crop, though much is exported with limited local value added.
