What the report says

Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is trying to maintain a court restriction on funds linked to the purchase of the Amaryllis Hotel, with the current order set to expire on October 7, according to Nyasa Times as republished by AllAfrica. The funds are tied to a deal financed by the Public Service Pension Trust Fund and are now under scrutiny in a case that has drawn attention from both the ACB and the Financial Intelligence Authority.

The High Court in Malawi, in a ruling by Judge Redson Kapindu on September 25, renewed the restriction order for three months after an earlier interim extension. The order blocks Yusuf Investments Limited, which owns the hotel, from accessing the disputed money while the investigation continues. ACB spokesperson Jacqueline Ngongonda said the ruling was a relief after a magistrate court had declined to renew the notice.

The bureau now faces a tight deadline to seek another extension before the order lapses. The judge indicated that any further renewal would need stronger justification and noted that the investigation had already been ongoing for some time. Lawyers for Yusuf Investments have challenged the legality of the renewed order, arguing that it should be set aside. The case has become a closely watched test of Malawi’s anti-corruption enforcement and the handling of public pension money.
