What the report says

The Northern Region Pool Association says a K2 million sponsorship from Mzuzu City South East MP William Chikweta Kaweche is helping to keep the Mzuzu City Pool Cup running in Malawi’s northern city of Mzuzu. According to the report carried by Nyasa Times and distributed by AllAfrica, the tournament began on August 8 and is now in its third week. The competition is being organized to maintain activity in the city’s pool scene after a long period without meaningful play.

NRPA vice chairperson John Yazenga Mkandawire said 12 clubs from across Mzuzu are taking part, and noted that Kaweche has supported the association before, including a regional league last year. Club officials also welcomed the funding. Njonjo Pool Club general secretary Charles Malisau said teams had been idle since last year and were eager for competitive matches again.

The tournament includes clubs from areas such as Luwinga, Chibavi, Chiputula, Ekwendeni, Mchengautuba and Mzuzu Old Town. It is scheduled to run for three months, with the winning club set to receive K1 million. The runner-up will get K600,000, while third and fourth places are due K300,000 and K100,000. The sponsorship matters because pool organizations in the region say outside support for the sport is limited.
