Malawi: Mayor Jomo Hit With K297.8m Lawsuit Over Alleged Fuel Queue Beating

What the report says
Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman is facing a damages claim of K297.8 million, along with a demand for a written apology, after a motorist accused him of assault during a dispute at a fuel station in Blantyre. The account, reported by Nyasa Times and distributed by AllAfrica, centers on an incident alleged to have taken place at Mount Pleasant on 28 October 2026.
According to the report, the complainant, Lordmarlven Nechavava, through Ritz Attorneys-at-Law, sent a demand letter to Osman and the Blantyre City Council on 29 October. The letter seeks K97.8 million in general damages and K200 million in aggravated or exemplary damages, not including medical costs. It also calls for an apology from both the mayor and the council within seven days.
The lawyers allege that Nechavava had been waiting in a fuel queue when he questioned the mayor over a dispute involving another driver allegedly being allowed to move ahead. The letter claims Osman struck him with a stick, leaving him with a jaw injury that made eating difficult. Nechavava is also said to have filed a complaint with Blantyre Police Station.
The report notes that the allegations have not been tested in court, and that neither Osman nor the city council had publicly responded at the time. The case highlights tensions linked to fuel shortages and long queues, a recurring problem for motorists in Malawi.
