Malawi: Malawi Weighs Tax Breaks for Fish Farmers As Wild Stocks Dwindle

Nyasa Times, in a report distributed by AllAfrica, said Malawi is looking at possible tax and duty relief for investors in fish cage farming as pressure grows on catches from Lake Malawi and other natural water bodies. The proposals were discussed by Natural Resources Minister Patricia Wiskes during a Saturday visit to Lake Malawi Aquaculture, a commercial chambo operation, and the Chikombe fish landing site in Salima district, according to the report published on 20 July 2026.

Wiskes said costly inputs, especially imported equipment, are discouraging private investment, and that her ministry plans to consult the finance ministry on incentives to lower those barriers. The government’s interest in aquaculture comes as wild fish stocks face strain linked in the report to overfishing and environmental degradation. Fish remains important for food supply and incomes in Malawi, making farmed production a potential way to reduce shortages and support new business activity.

The minister also addressed doubts about farm-raised chambo, a popular tilapia, saying fish she saw at Lake Malawi Aquaculture showed that local operations could produce commercially viable sizes. At Chikombe, she commended conservation work around Mbenje Island, described as a key breeding area, while Paramount Chief Makanjira said delayed by-laws on natural resource management were weakening enforcement efforts.

Lake Malawi Aquaculture managing director David Nkhwazi said the industry also needs better access to fingerlings, feed and affordable finance, in addition to tax relief. The report said the government has not announced when any tax or duty waiver plan might be completed.
