What the report says

A senior economist at Malawi’s Reserve Bank is urging the country to strengthen its economy as weaker global growth threatens exports, aid flows and broader development prospects. The comments, reported by Nyasa Times and distributed by AllAfrica, were made in the context of the International Monetary Fund’s latest World Economic Outlook, which points to slower expansion in major regions and a less favorable external environment for small open economies.

Kisu Simwaka said Malawi should not depend on external demand or donor support to drive growth. He argued that the country is already lagging behind neighboring economies and even the wider region, and that reforms are needed to improve resilience. His analysis highlighted falling tobacco earnings, Malawi’s largest foreign exchange source, as a sign that softer global demand is already affecting the economy.

Simwaka also noted that slower growth in Europe, a moderation in Asia and uncertainty in oil markets could pressure Malawi through weaker commodity prices, inflation and foreign exchange shortages. He said the government’s priorities should include building foreign currency reserves, addressing fiscal imbalances and removing structural barriers to productivity. The broader significance, as described in the report, is that Malawi faces a difficult combination of low growth, currency stress and dependence on external conditions at a time when the world economy is slowing.
