What the report says

Malawi’s government has responded to criticism from leaders of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), saying it has acknowledged the church’s concerns but still believes the country’s economic recovery is improving. The response came in a statement dated 14 October 2026 from Information and Communications Technology Minister Dr. Shadric Namalomba, according to the report distributed by AllAfrica from Nyasa Times.

The government said President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s administration is working through inherited economic problems and is focusing on what it described as the key pressures of food, fuel, fertiliser and foreign exchange. It said current measures are intended to stabilise supply, support the economy and rebuild public confidence. Officials also described the recovery path as encouraging and urged patience, unity and cooperation as the country tries to move forward.

The CCAP’s Church and Society leaders from the Livingstonia, Nkhoma and Blantyre synods had earlier issued a statement calling for a prophetic response to hardship, accountability and economic relief. They said living conditions had worsened and appealed for a national forum bringing together government, faith leaders, civil society and business. The church statement also said that while it recognized government efforts, progress on paper does not directly ease daily shortages. The exchange highlights continuing public pressure on Malawi’s leaders to show concrete results on prices, supplies and broader economic stability.
